By bike along the state border

  • by
In mid-June, a sporting adventure took place in the border regions of Slovenia, featuring amateur cyclist Ignac Bakšeta, who will cycle along the Slovenian border over 10 days. A documentary film, Contour Slovenia, is being made to commemorate this, produced by Vihar Media.
This is an award-winning film crew that will document Ignac's sporting feat by cycling a 1,500-kilometre route along the Slovenian border. The aim of the Contour Slovenia project is to inspire Slovenian and international audiences with the natural beauty and exploration of Slovenia by bicycle.
The seventh and eighth stages of Contour Slovenia also take place along the Slovenian Istria. And it is precisely here that we met up with the initiative of both the organiser and the local Las Istra., who has proven to be such a supporter of this project, also with the aim of using this »adventure« to promote our regions, gastronomic-tourist offerings, cycling routes, and the Istrian countryside, and to be able to promote ourselves at home and around the world through the documentary film. All in image, conversation and word.
Yesterday, he descended from Sveta gora, travelled through the Vipava Valley, Kras, and over Črni kal, Socerb, Tinjan, reaching Ankaran. He then cycled along the coast to Koper, Izola, Strunjan National Park, Piran, and then past the salt pans, through the Dragonja Valley, between the Rokava (Škrline) and Dragonja rivers, he ascended via a forest path to Labor, Boršt, and finally to Popeter. Members of the Society for Healthy Living also coordinated the project during the journey and the stay in Slovenian Istria.
Tired but satisfied, Ignac Bakše, along with his 15-member team documenting the journey through photography, film, and writing, sought hospitality at Domačija Butul in Manžan near Koper. Here, they listened with curiosity to a presentation of the farm and indulged in a culinary experience by Črt Butul. The evening's menu featured local, healthy food made from ingredients sourced from Istrian producers, some of whom are members of Las Istra.
After a night's sleep, they were greeted in the early morning hours by an authentic Istrian breakfast, prepared at Kmetija Butul, which was an excellent send-off for continuing their journey to Gračišče, Sočerga, climbing up to Rakitovec and Slavnik, and then on to Brkini, Ilirska Bistrica, past Snežnik to Babnje Polje. Today's stage goal is to conclude somewhere along the Kolpa river near Osilnica.
